Olm — size comparison — facts and sources
The olm inhabits underground karst waters of the Dinaric Alps. The pale form has an elongated body, eyes hidden beneath the skin and three pairs of red external gills retained in adulthood. Small limbs are widely separated along the body; the front feet have three toes and the hind feet two.
In darkness it uses well-developed smell and taste and also detects mechanical and electrical stimuli. It can respond to light despite strongly reduced eyes. It eats small invertebrates, moving mainly through body undulations. Besides gills it has simple lungs.
A local dark-coloured form with better-developed eyes also occurs in Slovenia. It shows that pale skin and reduced eyes do not describe all variation within the species equally.
