Psychrolutes marcidus is a bottom-dwelling fish of the continental slope off Australia, including Tasmania, recorded at depths of 600–1200 m. The familiar image of a deformed fish brought up from deep water does not represent its natural underwater shape.

The common name “blobfish” is also applied to other Psychrolutes species. The Australian Museum’s famous specimen “Mr Blobby” is identified as P. microporos, not P. marcidus.
