The Miniature Pinscher is a small, slender dog with an almost square body and a short, glossy coat. It may be solid red or black with reddish-brown tan markings. It has an elongated head, a distinct neck and strong, agile legs. Quick, springy movement and an alert gaze suggest readiness to investigate anything nearby.
It developed in Germany as a small pinscher among dogs guarding farmsteads and controlling rodents. It was already widely bred around the turn of the twentieth century; the 1925 studbook contained over a thousand entries. Selection established small size and two principal colour types. Resemblance to the Dobermann can mislead: it was not created by miniaturising that breed.
It is generally alert, exuberant and highly confident. It enjoys exploring, playing and learning household routines. It may be assertive towards its surroundings and often announces new events by barking. It becomes closely attached and actively seeks attention. Curiosity encourages it to find new occupations rather than remain a passive observer.
