The Miniature Wirehaired Dachshund is a small dog with an elongated body, short legs and a pronounced beard. Harsh body hair protects a dense undercoat, and longer eyebrows emphasise its attentive expression. It has strong legs and moves efficiently close to the ground. Size distinguishes it from the standard variety, while coat type chiefly distinguishes it from other miniatures.
The Dachshund developed in Germany from hounds selected for hunting in burrows. It also worked above ground, tracking and flushing game. Breeding eventually encompassed three sizes and three coat types, together forming nine varieties of one breed. The founding of the Deutsche Teckelklub in 1888 was an important step in its organisation. The Miniature Dachshund retains the hunting roots shared with larger relatives.
It is curious about its surroundings and readily investigates what lies behind an interesting scent. Its persistence can keep it engaged long after a person considers the task finished. It usually forms a strong bond with those close to it and enjoys household life. It often immediately notices new people or unusual sounds, announcing them by barking.
