Miniature Smooth-haired Dachshund — size comparison — facts and sources
The Miniature Smooth-haired Dachshund retains the elongated body and short legs of the larger Dachshund but belongs to a smaller size category. Smooth, close-fitting hair reveals its powerful build. It has a long head, drop ears and an attentive gaze. Miniature describes a size variety, not a separate breed with another purpose.
Dachshunds descended from German hounds selected for underground work. Several sizes were later established for different hunting conditions. They also worked above ground, flushing game and finding it by scent. The oldest breed club, Deutsche Teckelklub, has existed since 1888. Three sizes combined with three coat types produce nine modern varieties.
It is curious, ready to investigate scents thoroughly and persistently return to an activity. At home it often seeks closeness and joins daily household routines. It may be bold with larger dogs and announce a new person or sound by barking.
