The Miniature Longhaired Dachshund is a small dog with a long body, short legs and a soft, close-fitting coat. Hair on the ears, underside and tail is distinctly longer than on the head. It has drooping ears, an elongated head and a strong build. It moves efficiently with its body low to the ground.
It comes from Germany's Dachshund breeding tradition: low-set hounds capable of working underground. Smaller varieties developed alongside standard dogs, retaining their scenting abilities and hunting persistence. Dachshund work also included flushing game above ground and tracking wounded animals. The Deutsche Teckelklub, founded in 1888, is among the most important organisations in breed history. Longhaired miniatures are one of its nine varieties.
In everyday contact the Dachshund can be affectionate, cheerful and very interested in household activities. When exploring it often takes the initiative, scents for a long time and finds it hard to disengage from an interesting trail. It is alert to sounds and unfamiliar people, often announcing them vocally. It enjoys resting close to the family and can return enthusiastically to an engaging game.
