The English Mastiff is an enormous dog with a very broad head, a deep chest and a substantial body. It has a short coat, dark ears and a pronounced facial mask. Fawn, apricot or brindle colouring emphasises its straightforward, heavy outline. Strong legs and measured movement convey an overall impression of considerable strength and size.
The breed belongs to Britain’s tradition of large guarding dogs. Mastiffs guarded estates and, in the distant past, were also used in animal fighting. Modern breeding gradually directed their role towards guarding and companionship. The British population was very small after the Second World War; dogs imported from abroad supported its rebuilding.
Mastiffs generally take everyday events calmly and enjoy staying near family members. They can be gentle and affectionate with familiar people without constantly seeking active play. They often assess strangers with reserve, watching their behaviour. Watchfulness may involve positioning themselves between a familiar person and a stranger. When something matters to them, they can pursue their intentions firmly.
