The Maremma and Abruzzes Sheepdog is a large, strong dog with an abundant white coat and broad head. Small drooping ears and dark eyes contrast clearly with the pale hair. Its body is solid, and dense hair forms a more pronounced neck ruff. Its movement usually appears calm and economical, yet it can react quickly.
It descends from Italian dogs protecting flocks against predators. They accompanied sheep on seasonal movements between pastures, remaining close to livestock even when people were not immediately nearby. The modern name combines Maremma and Abruzzo, two regions associated with this tradition. Their chief task was flock protection, while directing movement fell to other shepherds' helpers.
The Maremma is independent, attentive and strongly attached to familiar surroundings. It is often calm and attached towards household members and more distant towards strangers. It assesses new situations itself and does not always immediately obey a command. Its alertness appears in watching territorial boundaries, new sounds and movement; apparent inactivity may be quiet monitoring of nearby events.
