The Manchester Terrier is a slender, well-muscled dog with a short, glossy coat. It is black with clearly defined reddish-brown tan markings. It has an elongated head, small folded ears and an agile outline. A light build combined with strong legs allows very quick reactions and changes of running direction.
It descends from British terriers used to control rats. Displays and contests involving these dogs were particularly popular in nineteenth-century Manchester, which gave the breed its established name. The Whippet is also considered a probable contributor to its ancestry. Urban conditions and selection for quickly catching small quarry were important in developing this black-and-tan terrier.
It is intelligent, alert and usually strongly attached to those close to it. It enjoys games requiring movement and quick reactions, and small moving objects readily absorb its attention. It may first observe newcomers before showing greater openness. At home it often seeks its people's company and takes an interest in daily activities. It can act independently, especially after discovering something particularly interesting.
