The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Maltese is a small dog with a long white coat that falls in straight, silky strands. Dark eyes, a black nose and dark eyelid rims stand out against the pale head. The body is slightly longer than it is tall, and the tail curves over the back. Its movement is light and energetic, with the head carried high.
Its ancestors were associated with ports and towns in the central Mediterranean, where small dogs helped control rodents. The name does not establish an exclusively Maltese origin: the breed standard links it to a word meaning harbour. Similar dogs later became valued companions, appearing beside wealthy women in Renaissance paintings.
The Maltese is generally affectionate, cheerful and attentive to people. It enjoys staying near family members, watching their activities and joining in play. Simple tasks are often learned quickly, especially as shared games. It explores with interest and readily announces something new.
