The Malinois is a short-coated Belgian Shepherd with a lean, almost square body. It has upright ears, an elongated head and a fawn coat with dark overlay and a black mask. The short coat reveals strong muscles, while the light frame supports rapid acceleration and changes of direction. Its upright posture and focused gaze often suggest readiness before a task begins.
Breeding of varied local Belgian herding dogs became organised in the late nineteenth century. Professor Adolphe Reul helped identify dogs sharing a common type. Under the FCI standard, the Malinois is one of four Belgian Shepherd varieties, named after Mechelen, known in French as Malines. Herding work was followed by service and working sports, where fast responses and endurance were valued.
Highly attentive to human signals, it readily engages in activity. It enjoys chasing moving objects, playing and learning rules. Arousal can rise as quickly as interest in a task. Watchful towards its surroundings, it often forms a strong bond with a handler. Intensity varies between lines, especially among dogs bred for work.
