The Majorca Shepherd Dog, or Ca de Bestiar, is a large, powerful, black-coated dog with long legs. It has an elongated muzzle, strong head and slightly drooping ears. The shorthaired variety is most common, although the standard also includes a longer coat. Its build remains agile and muscular without excessive heaviness.
It descends from local farm dogs of the Balearic Islands, particularly Majorca. It moved livestock, guarded farmyards and protected property, performing varied tasks close to its owner. Selection favoured usefulness in this work, and modern breeding established the local type under its own name.
It becomes strongly attached to its handler and may be reserved with others. Attentive and courageous, it tends to assess situations independently. Young dogs may be particularly sensitive and cautious in new encounters. It can show considerable affection among familiar people without developing trust in strangers as quickly.
