The Karaman is a large Macedonian mountain dog with a strong build and a dense, predominantly black coat. It has a broad head, drooping ears and a richly feathered tail. Hair is particularly abundant around the neck and rear body. Unhurried movement reveals the solid build of a dog capable of spending long periods in open country.
Its history is linked to Macedonian pastoralism and seasonal movements between summer and winter pastures. It accompanied people on these journeys, protecting livestock both in transit and at stops. Local tradition attached great importance to it, reflected in songs and depictions of pastoral dogs. Modern breeding draws on the type preserved by people who worked with these dogs.
The Karaman is usually calm around familiar people but attentive to changes in its surroundings. It remains reserved with strangers and chooses its own distance. It may observe a situation for a long time before acting, then respond decisively when it considers action necessary. It is strongly attached to its owner without requiring constant direction. Independence is among the most important features of its everyday behaviour.
