The Löwchen, or Little Lion Dog, is small and strongly built with a long, wavy coat. Its recognisable trim shortens hair on the rear body while leaving a full mane in front and a plume on the tail tip. Beneath the styling is an agile dog with dark round eyes and hanging ears, occurring in many colours.
The breed belongs to Europe’s small companion-dog tradition. Similar dogs appeared in art and wealthy households, although a single straightforward ancestry is difficult to establish. Its German name means little lion and refers to the trim. The hairstyle is a recognisable historical feature rather than evidence of kinship with larger similarly named dogs.
Löwchens generally make contact readily and show clear interest in human activities. They enjoy play, join shared tasks quickly and can energetically attract attention. They are also affectionate and enjoy resting near familiar people. Many explore new places confidently and freely.
