The Large Munsterlander is a strongly built pointing dog with long black-and-white hair. White areas may be ticked, while the head is mainly black, sometimes with a small white marking. It has an elongated muzzle, hanging ears and a well-haired tail. Its athletic, moderately light outline supports sustained searching and capable swimming.
It belongs to the German long-haired pointing dogs whose planned breeding began in the late nineteenth century. Separation followed the exclusion of black-and-white dogs from German Longhaired Pointer breeding in 1909. Supporters formed their own club in 1919 and subsequently opened a separate studbook. Selection favoured versatile dogs useful before the shot and in finding and retrieving game.
Munsterlanders are usually lively, quick to learn and cooperative. In the field they work their noses enthusiastically while remaining attentive to the handler. They can persist with a task and quickly move to another activity. They form close family relationships and often seek shared occupations. Energy combines with concentration, with particular excitement around interesting scents or movement.
