The Lakeland Terrier is a small, light dog with relatively long legs and harsh hair. It has a narrow, powerful body, an elongated bearded head and small forward-folded ears. Dense hair emphasises legs and muzzle while retaining a natural working appearance. Its build allows efficient jumping, squeezing through gaps and travel on uneven ground.
It originates in England's Lake District, which supplies its name. Local terriers assisted hunts over mountains, crossing rocks, steep slopes and narrow retreats. Breeders selected courageous, agile and enduring dogs. A breed with established appearance gradually arose from the regional working population, retaining strong links to northern England's landscape.
It is bold, cheerful and usually very confident. It readily explores and begins play, especially involving chasing or finding things. It can be affectionate and sociable with familiar people yet defend its own goal determinedly. Liveliness appears in continual interest in new stimuli, not only a need to move fast.
