The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a compact, sturdy dog with a dense coat of small curls. It has a broad, bearded muzzle, drop ears and round eyes whose colour varies with the coat. Colours include brown, off-white with patches and brown roan. Beneath the shaggy coat is a strong, almost square body.
It comes from Romagna in Italy, particularly the lowlands around Comacchio and the marshes of Ravenna. Originally a water retriever, it gradually lost that role as wetlands were drained for farming. Breeders developed its ability to find underground truffles while reducing the tendency to abandon the search to chase game. Truffle hunting became its defining specialism.
Lagotti are generally attentive, quick to learn and closely attached to their people. They enjoy searching tasks that allow independent work while staying in contact with a handler. An interesting scent can hold their attention for a long time. At home, they tend to follow family life closely and may bark to announce a visitor.
