The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Labrador Retriever is a strongly built dog with a broad head, a deep body and a short, very dense coat. Its characteristic otter-like tail is thick at the base and gradually tapers. Colours are black, yellow or chocolate. The build combines strength, endurance and the agility needed for swimming and field work.
Its ancestors were water dogs used by fishers in Newfoundland. Dogs brought to Britain were developed as bird retrievers, valued for scenting ability, readiness to enter water and a gentle mouth. Organised club breeding developed in the early twentieth century. The breed later became widely used for guiding, rescue and scent detection.
Labradors are generally outgoing, cheerful and willing to work with people. Many enjoy carrying objects, retrieving toys and investigating water. They quickly spot opportunities for food or play. Young dogs can be energetic and demonstrative. Working and show lines may differ noticeably in build and intensity of behaviour.
