The Koolie is an Australian herding dog with a light, athletic outline. Lines vary in coat length, upright or folded ears and colour. Merle is familiar but not universal. A common feature is a build suited to agile, sustained livestock work.
The population developed on Australian farms where working ability chiefly determined selection. Roots are associated with British herding dogs imported by settlers. German Koolie referred to some breeders of German ancestry, not a separate German breed. Appearance remained varied because usefulness with livestock mattered more than show uniformity.
Koolies usually watch movement closely and act quickly. They adjust pace to livestock and human guidance while solving situations independently. Engagement need not mean constant excitement: working breeders also valued calm waiting when not needed. Many enjoy cooperative games and rapid learning away from work.
