The Komondor is a large, powerful dog beneath a pale coat forming long, thick cords. The coat develops gradually and may reach almost to the ground in adults. It has a broad head, a substantial body and strong legs. At rest it can resemble a pale heap of hair, but rising into motion reveals considerable speed and strength.
The breed has long been associated with Hungarian pastoral life. Its ancestors are traditionally linked to Asian dogs arriving with migrating peoples, although the exact migrations remain unclear. It protected flocks from predators and guarded property. Often working without direct instructions, it was valued for independent judgement and readiness to defend its area.
In familiar surroundings it may calmly watch for long periods. It is deeply attached to home but distinctly mistrustful of strangers. It makes independent decisions and need not wait for encouragement if it perceives a threat. Quiet rest can quickly give way to a firm response. It shows attachment to familiar people, and particular watchfulness often increases in the evening and at night.
