The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Kai is a medium-sized Japanese spitz with a brindle coat, upright ears and a tail carried over the back. It has strong muscles, a wedge-shaped head and compact feet. Dense hair combines a harsher outer coat with soft underfur. Dark stripes give the distinctive appearance recalled by kai tora-ken, a name referring to a tiger.
The breed developed in mountainous Kai, now part of Yamanashi Prefecture. Local dogs hunted boar and deer, valued for agility on steep wooded ground and cooperation during hunts. Regional isolation helped preserve the native type. In 1934 the Kai became a Japanese Natural Monument, an important step in protecting the breed.
It is watchful, lively and highly observant. It may investigate independently, responding quickly to scents and moving animals. It forms strong bonds but can keep a cautious distance in new situations. Willingness to cooperate does not remove independence. Readiness for action, focus on a target and adaptable movement over uneven ground are especially apparent.
