Japanese Terrier — size comparison — facts and sources

The Japanese Terrier is a small, lightly built dog with an almost square outline and an exceptionally short, smooth coat. It often has a dark head and largely white body. Drooping or folded ears and dark eyes give it an attentive appearance. It is slender yet agile and fast-moving.

The breed developed in Japanese port cities, including Kobe and Yokohama. Its beginnings are associated with Smooth Fox Terriers brought from Europe and crossed with small local dogs. They were bred primarily as companions. Planned selection began around 1920, with a recognisable type established roughly a decade later. This produced a small terrier with its own Japanese history.

It is usually lively, cheerful and eager for close contact with household members. It quickly responds to movement, invitations to play and new arrivals. It can attentively follow people's activities and actively seek involvement in shared tasks. Among familiar people it can be bold and affectionate. Its curiosity often appears in exploring nearby surroundings, even after resting quietly beside its owner moments earlier.
