Jämthund — size comparison — facts and sources
The Jämthund is a large Swedish spitz with grey fur and paler muzzle and underside markings. It has erect ears, powerful legs and a bushy tail loosely curled over the back. It is larger and more elongated than the Norwegian Elkhound, with which it is sometimes confused. Dense hair and strong build suit northern forests.
It originates in Sweden's big-game hunting tradition. Moose are its strongest association, although it also hunted other animals. It was long judged with the smaller Norwegian Elkhound, making type differences harder to preserve. Separate recognition came in 1946. Its working role was locating game and holding its attention through barking until the hunter arrived.
It combines energy with considerable composure. It need not be constantly moving to take sudden interest in a scent or movement. It works independently and persistently rather than leaving every decision to people. In familiar surroundings it can be calm without unnecessary nervousness.
