The Jack Russell Terrier is a small, strong dog with a slightly elongated body and an alert expression. White predominates in the coat, with tan or black patches. The coat may be smooth, rough or intermediate, known as broken. Small ears fold forwards, while springy movement and strong feet reveal its readiness for action.
The breed descends from English terriers used in nineteenth-century fox hunting. The Reverend John Russell developed dogs able to accompany hounds and work underground, flushing hidden quarry. Two types later became established: the taller, squarer Parson Russell and the shorter, somewhat longer Jack Russell. Australian breeding played an important role in developing the latter.
Jack Russells are generally bold, inquisitive and very energetic. They enjoy sniffing, digging, investigating crevices and following small movements. They may persist with an idea for a long time even when offered another activity. With people they can be cheerful and keen to play, but confidence and quick reactions mean their emotions are often expressed very directly.
