Italian Shorthaired Segugio — size comparison — facts and sources

The shorthaired Italian Segugio is slender and long-legged, with an elongated head and low-hanging ears. Close-fitting hair reveals its light, muscular build. Colours include fawn and black and tan. Its gentle expression contrasts with its energy in the field.

It descends from Italy’s scent-hound tradition, with selection chiefly based on finding and pursuing game. Two separately described coat types developed: short and rough. The shorthaired Segugio remains a versatile hound working on varied ground, alone or with other hounds.

Persistent, fast and absorbed in searching, it may be reserved but generally composed with unfamiliar people. On a trail, scent dominates its attention and its resonant voice carries far. Independence allows it to continue working without constant human direction.
