The Irish Terrier is a slender, long-legged dog with a red, harsh coat. A beard adorns its elongated head, and small ears fold forwards. It is strong without heaviness: its outline allows fast running and efficient movement in dense vegetation. The rough coat lies close to the body and should not conceal its natural proportions.
It is one of Ireland's native terriers, associated with farms and versatile work alongside people. Guarding premises combined with hunting small game. Courage, endurance and an ability to find their way led to their use as message carriers during the First World War. The breed therefore developed from working rural dogs, although it later gained popularity beyond farms.
With those close to it, the Irish Terrier can be affectionate, demonstrative and playful. It reacts quickly to events and shows great determination in action. Friendliness towards people does not mean equally relaxed relationships with every unfamiliar dog. Openness within the family combines with strong confidence; in conflict it may respond decisively rather than readily retreat.
