The Irish Red and White Setter is a strong, long-legged dog with distinct red patches on a white coat. Longer hair feathers the ears, legs and tail without obstructing movement. It often appears stockier and more substantial than the solid red setter while retaining a sporting build suited to sustained searching.
Red-and-white setters represent the older of Ireland’s two setter traditions. Solid red dogs became increasingly popular in the nineteenth century, making the earlier type very rare. Breeding recovery began in the 1920s. Preservation particularly emphasised bird work rather than colouring alone.
It is usually friendly and readily engages with people. Activity reveals determination, enthusiasm and persistence. It searches widely and may concentrate on one task for a long time after finding an interesting scent. Cheerfulness aids cooperation without removing hunting independence. Affection accompanies a desire to participate in surrounding events.
