The woodland dor beetle is common in European deciduous and mixed forests. Its sturdy, dark body has a metallic sheen, particularly visible underneath. Regular grooves run along the wing cases.
Moving through the litter, it visits dung, fungal remains and other concentrations of decaying organic matter on the forest floor. Adults also use sap leaking from damaged trees. The beetles may be active from early spring to autumn, with flights particularly noticeable at dusk.
The female prepares underground chambers supplied with food for the larvae.
