European stag beetle — size comparison — facts and sources

The European stag beetle lives in woodland, parks and gardens with decaying wood. Larvae spend much longer developing in rotten wood than the adult beetle lives. Removing old stumps and dead wood takes away their development sites.

Adults are easiest to see on warm evenings during the breeding season. Males have large mandibles used in contests over access to females. After reproduction, the next generation again spends most of its life hidden in decomposing wood.
