Valgus hemipterus is a small flower beetle with a brown body covered in pale scales. Its shortened wing cases expose the end of the abdomen. It occurs on meadows, woodland edges and clearings, and in parks and gardens.
Adults visit flowers, eating pollen, nectar and plant parts. They readily use flowering hawthorn. They are easiest to observe in spring and early summer.
The larvae develop in decaying organic material, including wood. Males and females differ in some structural details, and the pale scales may gradually wear away.
