The ruby-tailed wasp inhabits sunny woodland edges, meadows, gardens and places with bare ground. In Europe it also visits wooden walls and structures containing other insects' nests. Adults take nectar, readily visiting umbelliferous plants.
The female searches for nests of solitary hymenopterans. Her larvae exploit the host larvae and the food stored for them.
Many cuckoo wasps have very similar colours, so reliable identification requires examination of fine structural features. A red-and-green outline alone cannot assign every individual encountered to Chrysis ignita.
