The red mason bee is solitary. A female occupies an existing channel in wood, a hollow stem or masonry, dividing it with mud partitions. In each cell she leaves an egg and a supply of pollen mixed with nectar.
Adults fly in spring when trees and shrubs flower. Their offspring develop later inside closed cells, without workers’ help. The channel remains the next generation’s development site long after the female’s flight season ends.
