The puss moth is a large moth with pale, greyish-white wings patterned with fine dark lines. Adults rest on trunks and walls, among other places, and are active mainly at night. The species inhabits forests, parks, poplar avenues and thickets containing the plants its caterpillars need.
The caterpillar eats willow and poplar leaves. It has a distinctive saddle-like pattern and two projections at the end of its abdomen. When threatened it extends thin filaments from these projections.
Adults do not feed, relying on reserves accumulated during development.
