The pine hawk-moth is a slender moth with grey wings and dark lengthwise markings. It occurs in forests and other wooded areas containing pines and related plants that provide food for its developing caterpillars.
The adult moth feeds on nectar. The caterpillar, by contrast, eats pine needles and those of some other conifers. Pale lines on its body break up its outline among the needles.
Adults appear mainly from late spring into summer, followed by feeding caterpillars. The species passes the winter as a pupa hidden in the soil.
