Luna moth — size comparison — facts and sources

The luna moth inhabits eastern North American forests. Caterpillars eat tree leaves and form a cocoon after growth, entering the pupal stage inside.

Adults do not feed. They use reserves accumulated by the caterpillar, while males locate females through chemical signals. Warmer parts of the range may support more generations annually.

Long hindwing tails create its distinctive appearance. Their relationship to defence against hunting bats is being studied.
