Western honey bees live in colonies with a queen, workers and seasonally present drones. Workers collect nectar and pollen from flowers, helping pollinate plants. Within the nest, they build comb, feed larvae, store food and guard the entrance. Their tasks change with age and the needs of the colony.
The queen lays eggs and drones take part in reproduction. A new colony can form through swarming, when some bees leave the original nest. Scouts search for a suitable home for the swarm. The availability of flowering plants affects food stores and colony growth.
