The hermit beetle in this profile means Osmoderma eremita, associated with western and part of Central Europe. It should not be equated without qualification with Poland's Osmoderma barnabita, formerly included under the same name. Its dark, massive body has a faint metallic sheen, and its life centres on old trees.
Larvae develop in wood mould filling cavities. Long-lived trees provide not only food but also a lasting, sheltered environment that a fresh trunk cannot replace. Adults also remain close to this habitat and are often difficult to see from outside.
Distance between suitable hollows matters for site connectivity. The loss of one old tree may remove an entire local development habitat.
