Dasytes plumbeus — size comparison — facts and sources

Dasytes plumbeus is a small beetle with an elongated body and a dark metallic sheen. Fine hairs give its surface a less uniform appearance. Adults occur on flowers in and around forests, readily visiting hawthorns and the flower heads of umbellifers.

The adult beetle eats pollen. The larva lives in a different environment, hunting small insects associated with wood decay within the wood.

Adults occur mainly from late spring into summer, while the pupal stage may survive the winter. Dasytes aeratus is very similar and often cannot be reliably distinguished in an ordinary photograph.
