Carabus granulatus is a beetle associated mainly with wet forests and peatlands. Smooth ridges and rows of chain-like bumps run along its wing cases. The surface may be brown, coppery or greenish, and its femora black or reddish.
It hunts insects, snails and earthworms near the ground. Cover in litter, beneath moss and loose bark provides resting places. It is active from spring to autumn and spends the cold period hidden in such protected corners.
Some individuals can fly, although most observations concern ground movement. The similar Carabus cancellatus differs in features of the first antennal segment and wing-case tips, among other details.
