Giant peacock moth — size comparison — facts and sources

The giant peacock moth is a very large European moth with broad grey-brown wings. Each wing bears a large eyespot, and a pale, wavy border emphasises its shape. The species occurs mainly in warmer regions containing the trees its caterpillars need.

Caterpillars use many deciduous trees, including walnuts, pears, apples and other fruit trees. The adult moth has reduced mouthparts and does not feed.

Females are active mainly at night, while males may also fly by day. Emergence timing depends on the region and climatic conditions.
