Northern giant hornet — size comparison — facts and sources

The northern giant hornet is a social insect native to Asia. Workers hunt other insects, including bees, providing animal food for larvae. Adults also use liquid energy sources.

An overwintered queen establishes a nest in spring and tends the first brood. Once workers emerge the colony grows rapidly. Males and future queens are produced towards the end of the season.

Vespa mandarinia is a separate species from the Asian hornet Vespa velutina. Popular reports sometimes confuse them, despite differences in size and distribution history.
