Ghost mantis — size comparison — facts and sources
The ghost mantis resembles a dry, ragged leaf. Its head bears a twisted projection, while lobes on its legs and the irregular body outline break up the typical insect shape. Individuals may show various shades of brown, grey or green; these do not indicate separate species.
It hunts mainly by ambush. It waits on a plant until a small insect comes within reach of its spiny front legs, then makes a rapid grab. Mimicking a plant fragment helps it both avoid detection by prey and hide from its own predators.
Males have slimmer abdomens, longer antennae and wings extending beyond the abdominal tip, while females are broader and more heavily built.
