Four-spotted hister — size comparison — facts and sources

Hister quadrimaculatus is a compact, glossy beetle with red patches on black wing cases. The shortened cases leave the terminal abdominal segments exposed. It occurs on pastures, among other places, where it can be found around cattle and horse dung and other accumulations of decaying matter.

Both adults and larvae prey on the larvae and pupae of other insects.

The species can be difficult to find, and its current occurrence in Poland requires confirmation. Identification depends on the combination of wing-case pattern, body structure and other features, rather than the red colour of the patches alone.
