European mantis — size comparison — facts and sources

The European mantis hunts among grasses and other plants. It remains still for long periods, then grabs an approaching insect with a sudden foreleg movement. It also eats other small animals.

The female encloses eggs in a protective case called an ootheca. Young resemble wingless adults and feed independently from the start, growing through successive moults. A female may eat a male during breeding, but cannibalism does not accompany every encounter.
