The emperor rove beetle is an elongated ground-dwelling beetle with a black head, reddish wing cases and patches of golden hairs. It occurs in warm open areas, including meadows, pastures and clearings, where it walks among plant remains.
The adult is a predator. It searches for larvae, slugs, myriapods and other small invertebrates, and dung-rich places attract it through the presence of potential prey.
It can be observed from spring to autumn, with greater activity during part of spring and late summer. Similar rove beetles are distinguished using details of their hairs and structure.
