The emperor dragonfly patrols around water bodies and catches other insects in flight. Males regularly circle a chosen stretch of water, driving away competitors.

A female lays eggs in aquatic vegetation. Larvae develop underwater and hunt small animals. Near the end of development they leave the water; the final moult produces a winged adult. The species therefore needs both suitable water and surrounding vegetation.
