The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The devil's flower mantis has an elongated body, a conical head projection and broad lobes on its legs. At rest its green and brown surfaces blend with vegetation. Striking contrasting colours remain partly hidden on the inner front legs.
It is a predator catching insects with its spiny front pair of legs. A mobile head and large eyes allow prey tracking, while stillness aids ambush hunting. It originates in East Africa and is associated with vegetation where it can wait and moult safely.
When threatened it raises its body and spreads its front legs and wings, exposing a bright pattern. This display may surprise an attacker and allow time to escape. Females are larger than males.
