The devil's coach horse is a large, almost entirely black rove beetle. It inhabits forests, fields and heathlands, among other places; in warmer regions it also occurs in olive groves. Its short wing cases leave most of the mobile abdomen exposed.
It hunts mainly at night, taking insects, woodlice, snails and earthworms. When disturbed it may raise its abdomen in a characteristic defensive posture. It has no sting.
The female lays relatively large eggs. The developing larvae are also predatory. Adults are active through much of the warm season, often sheltering by day beneath stones, wood and damp litter.
