The common house mosquito uses human surroundings containing small bodies of standing water. Adult females are particularly active from dusk to dawn. Adults use liquid food, and females also take blood. Forms within the species have differing host preferences, so not every behaviour can be assigned equally to all local populations.
The larvae develop in containers, ditches and organically rich water, among other places. Culex pipiens belongs to a group of similar mosquitoes that cannot always be reliably distinguished through a brief observation.
