The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The bee beetle Trichius fasciatus inhabits open woodland, clearings, wooded edges, parks and meadows in Europe. A densely hairy pronotum and yellow wing cases with black patches give it a bumblebee-like appearance.
Adults visit flowers, taking pollen and flower parts. On summer days they may remain in one flower head for a long time and sometimes spend the night hidden among its structures.
Larvae lead a different life in rotting wood, using decaying organic matter. Development may span two seasons. Similar bee beetles have very similar colours, so a single photograph of the back is often insufficient for identification without checking fine structural features.
